Golf Breaks – Scotland
Golf-Link-Scotland have been arranging bespoke golf breaks to Scotland since 1999 for golfers from all around the world. We have also had the pleasure of arranging travel schedules for USA Major winners and Master champions.
Our ‘new’ website has been developed to provide golf, accommodation and travel information for the independent traveller to help you arrange your own golf break to Scotland.
We have compiled a comprehensive Visitor’s Guide to Scottish golf courses which we have sub divided into 8 regions, with a link directly to each courses own web site in case you are looking for further information, or perhaps you will want to e-mail them for a tee time. We hope this makes things easier for you when you are planning your big trip to Scotland.
Please don’t underestimate the travelling time between the different regions of Scotland. If you are from the United Kingdom you will know the road network system but if you are visiting our Scottish shores from further afield you may be looking at a map and thinking it won’t take very long to travel from a to b. Travelling on our roads can take a lot longer than it may look. So don’t try and do too much during your stay unless you have the time to do it.
Scotland as a country is able to provide the greatest of challenges to the golfer and we just don’t mean the rain! We actually have a link to major brand golf clothing if you are in need to look for new waterproofs That is slightly unfair as the weather isn’t actually that bad and when you are in front of the superb R&A clubhouse on the first tee at St Andrews, or at Gleneagles, Turnberry, Carnoustie, Troon or one of the unsung wonderful courses we have to offer, does it really matter what the weather is doing?
Golf-Link-Scotland actively promotes all Scottish courses and not just the Open venues.
We want to provide information to you on all our Scottish golf courses, suggestions on places to stay for a golf break or golf vacation. There are many regions of Scotland for you to consider for your trip, other than playing golf in the Kingdom of Fife. We have put together some information on top hotels in Scotland, homely guest houses and self catering accommodation.
Where To Stay by Region:
- Aberdeen & North East
- Argyll & Stirling
- Ayrshire, Galloway, Dumfries & Borders
- Edinburgh & Lothians
- Glasgow & Clyde Valley
- Highlands & Skye
- Perth, Angus & Fife
- Western & Northern Isles
If you have played golf in Scotland before and are planning a return trip you may want to consider some of Scotland’s other golfing venues that are less well know and promoted, and not only just play golf at St Andrews.
Have you considered Prestwick the venue for the first ever Open Championship? A superb golfing experience steeped in folklore. How about Royal Dornoch Championship currently ranked No.4 by Golf Digest UK & Ireland 2011. Loch Lomond golf course is perhaps one of the best golf courses in the world to play, that’s if you can actually get on it as it is private. In the east Lothian region outside Edinburgh our capital there is a wealth of fantastic courses to explore starting with the Open Championship venue of Muirfield. Alongside Muirfield there are 3 Gullane courses and Dunbar to name only a couple of others. Why not tie in a couple of nights stay in Edinburgh to see the historical city before playing tour golf. If not everyone in your golf party plays the game it would be a great place to be.
Golf Courses by Region:
- Aberdeen & North East
- Ayrshire (Prestwick, Troon, Turnberry), Galloway, Dumfries & Borders
- Dundee, Perthshire (Gleneagles), Angus (Carnoustie) & Fife (St Andrews)
- Edinburgh & Lothians (Muirfield)
- Glasgow (Loch Lomond) & Clyde Valley
- Highlands (Royal Dornoch) & Isle of Skye
- West Highlands, Argyll & Stirling
- Western Isles, Orkney & Shetland
Another suggestion for you when organising your golf break is looking for hotels with golf courses of their own, they don’t have to be one of the luxury hotels in Scotland. There are many to be found with a 9 hole course to suit every budget, it need not be a case of booking in at the St Andrews Old Course Hotel or the Fairmont St Andrews for you to find one. Beautiful though it is.
Please find further links to our airports, the AA route Planner and how to obtain an Old Course tee time to help you plan your itinerary:

- Playing St Andrews Old Course (Current handicap certificates required. 24 for men and 36 for women)
A golf break in Scotland does not only have to be for golf, here you are able to shoot deer or pheasant, with a gun or just with your camera. You can go fishing on a Scottish loch or river, there is even Canadian canoeing to be found near Aviemore on Loch Morlich. With Munros to climb and conquer and exciting cities to discover, you’ll wonder how you are going to fit your golf in.
We have information about the Ryder Cup, have a look at the post for yourself, even though it isn’t actually Scottish it is a fantastic sporting event. And with the Ryder Cup being played for at Gleneagles in 2014 it has a real Scottish flavour.
Thanks mainly due to the Norman influence Scotland has been building castles for over 900 years, and there are many to discover in every region. The history of Scotland is also visible on the battlefields, none more so than at the Heritage Centre found within the haunting site of Culloden. You can walk in the steps of the Jacobite’s as they fought to cling on to their way of life, and ultimately their very lives.
You can visit the site at Abbey Craig over looking Stirling where it is believed that Sir William Wallace stood as he considered his forthcoming battle in 1297. This was to known as The Battle of Stirling Bridge, after which William Wallace was forever known as our National Hero. Immortalised forever by Hollywood and Mel Gibson even though they got the true life story of Sir William Wallace just a little bit wrong. Spend sometime checking out the true history of the Guardian of Scotland as it will enhance your visit.
Tour the romantic Islands and the dramatic mountains and glens. Take some binoculars with you and enjoy a spot of Nessie spotting as you spend a leisurely picnic on the shores of Loch Ness. Scotland enjoys a rich history of ancient landscapes, just perfect for walking, cycling, climbing, boating, and water sports there is something for everyone, and I haven’t even mentioned the Malt Whisky Trail. If you enjoy your whisky then you will in the right place to sample some of the best malts in the world. Take a bottle home with you but don’t make the mistake of putting in your hand luggage if you are flying unless it is a miniature as a customs officer will relieve you of it.
We have a page for you to view with a little of the History of Golf in Scotland. Touching on some famous characters from Scottish history who enjoyed a round of golf themselves to some of the magicians of architecture who designed many of the golf courses in Scotland. We thank them for their bunkers, dog-legs and all the water they love to catch us out with.
As of 2012 Scotland is tied with the USA with the most Open Championship wins. Our most recent champions being Paul Lawrie and Sandy Lyle. Why don’t you plan a golf break to play scotland’s current or past Open Championship venues? This has always been a popular idea with visitors, especially our friends from the USA and Canada. With St Andrews Old Course, Muirfield, Carnoustie, Royal Troon and Turnberry on the current list you would be playing some of the most famous golf courses in the world. Add in Prestwick, Mussleburgh and you would have an itinerary that would be the envy of golfers everywhere.
The choice is endless as to where to play and if you want any suggestions please send us an email and we will try and help you where we can.
Perhaps you just want to relax, listen to the pipes and enjoy the peace and quiet of our countryside. You will discover our history whilst enjoying our traditional warm Scottish hospitality.
No day is long enough especially when you are on a golf break to Scotland!
