Golf-Link-Scotland bring to you just a small selection of the hotels, guest houses and the friendly b&b establishments in the Ayrshire, Galloway and Dumfries & Borders area. Dumfries & Galloway is fortunate to enjoy a rich climate, and as such has some exotic plants wearing a blaze of beautiful colours throughout the seasons.

After crossing through the “gateway to Scotland” you are in the Borders filled with pathways, green hills with some pretty dramatic coastline and that’s before you start to explore the countless castles and ruins on show. There are many less crowded yet stunning golf courses to be found in the Scottish Borders too, so don’t forget to bring your clubs with you.

There is a real wealth of history in the Scottish Borders for you to discover, where fierce battles were won and lost. Steeped in the Jacobite nostalgia where you can see impressive castles where Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed on his way south.

For a real taste of the Scottish War of Independence follow in the foot steps of Robert the Bruce when you include a visit to Dumfries, it was here that John Comyn, Bruce’s rival for the throne, was murdered before the altar at Greyfriars Monastery.

If you can make time between playing golf, site seeing and discovering Scotland’s history – then eat a light breakfast and leave room to enjoy eating at some of Glasgow’s more bohemian restaurants. A few suggestions on that score might be the Art Deco, the Oyster Bar or the award winning Cafe Gandolfi.

Loch Lomond Golf Club is always worth including when you talk about golfing in this area of Scotland. If you are fortunate enough to play on this championship course it will live long in your memory. The setting beside the loch is glorious, if you have a chance to lift your head.

Glasgow enjoys a vibrant music scene and is a UNESCO city of music with plenty of concerts to see, check out what’s on at the SECC before you travel, may be you can tie in your trip with one of your favourite bands playing there. Don’t forget to visit the famous King Tut’s Wah Wah Club where you can see some of Scotland’s emerging bands playing.

No visit to Glasgow would be complete without popping into the famous Willow Tea Rooms which was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh  in 1904. There are plenty of buildings to be seen which bare his signature, but this is a great place to start your discovery of the famous Scottish architect.

A holiday in Glasgow & the Clyde Valley would not be complete if you don’t take the opportunity to attend a Highland Games or a festival of some kind. The Scots have a knack for putting on a show, all kicking off with Celtic Connections held in January, believed to be the largest winter music festival in the world.

A visit to the Theatre Royal is a treat for Ballet and Opera lovers alike, both performing in the magnificent theatre here. Perhaps you might prefer to hear the Royal National Scottish Orchestra who appear at the Royal Glasgow Concert Hall. Scottish culture at it’s finest.

A bustling street market, known locally as “The Barras” is held on Saturdays and Sundays, here in the East End of Glasgow, and you can pick up a bargain, enjoy the banter between the vendors and the buyers or just stroll along the street and enjoy the atmosphere.

Each August pipers from all over the world assemble to take part in the Glasgow International Piping Festival, love them or hate them, you can never ignore them!

Look out for the Glasgow tour bus if you prefer to be driven around the city so you can take the time to look up at some of Glasgow’s architecture, it’s so much more relaxing.

We hope you enjoy your visit to Glasgow and the Clyde Valley, whether you came to enjoy shopping on the “style mile” or to indulge your fascination for some Scottish history.

Argyle & Stirling two varied contrasts for the visitor, epitomising all that is wonderful about Scotland. You can enjoy the beautiful coast line of Argyle, then travel across to Stirling to soak up the history and culture.

A visit to Bannockburn is a must for any visitor to Stirling. In 1314 Robert the Bruce stood and rallied his army when they took on the might of the English army. A significant victory was won that day by the Scots, heralding the way forward to Independence. You can visit the site where it is believed the battle was fought, hard to imagine the noise of the fighting when the landscape is all so tranquil.

Ellary Estate occupies the peninsular formed between Loch Sween and Loch Caolisport. This is a rugged piece of coast, scenically very beautiful, but little visited – all traffic goes by the main road along the shores of Loch Fyne. Cottages are mostly former estate employees’ accommodation, which have been skilfully modernised to maintain their old-world charm. Holidaymakers have the freedom of access to the whole of Ellary Estate which is wonderful for hill walking, exploring, observing wild life and in general, a paradise for the country lover. Many bring small boats and enjoy visiting their favourite isolated inlet, sandy beach or islet which they sometimes come to think of as their very own. The cottages are presented to a very high standard at all times and are fully equipped with everything a holidaymaker is likely to require including telephones and televisions in spite of their isolated locations.

Just a sones throw from Stirling you can visit Doune Castle, which you will recognise from the film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” there is also a fine old cathedral in Dunblane within walking distance from Doune Castle, which dates back to the twelfth century.

Oban, up in Argyle is sometimes known as the sea food capital of Scotland, with many restaurants serving fish caught straight from the sea, It’s easy to hop onto a ferry, for a day trip across to the island of Mull where Tobermory is the main village on the island. Anyone with children will know that Tobermory is the location for the popular television series “Balamory” and you can enjoy picking out some of the doors the characters lived behind. They really are colourful.

The coastline of Argyle enjoys the waters warmed by the Gulf Stream, why not take advantage of the time of year and tie in a visit to Scotland with one of the many Highland Games held every summer? In August you can enjoy the Oban Highland Games, or Highland Gathering. They put on a great show, with very competitive field and track events, dancing and a Piping competition.

If you are visiting at Hogmanay – give the busy capital a miss, and join in the celebrations in Stirling, for one of the best parties in the land. There is fantastic live music to listen to,and  fireworks to see plus it’s all set against the superb backdrop of Stirling Castle. Haste ye back!

Perth, Angus & Fife are rare places to visit when you share a love of golf, but there are a host of possibilities for the visitor besides the golf courses. There are quaint fishing villages to walk through, like Crail and Pittenweem in Fife. Blair Castle in Blair Atholl, home to the Dukes of Atholl in Perthshire, they have a superb armoury and the Duke has the only private army in the land.

Angus has five glens, it’s truly a walkers haven with some un-spoilt and peaceful wilderness still to be found. You can take a tour around Glamis Castle and see for yourself why the Queen Mother loved her castle so much.

With the lochs, glens, beaches and hills Perth, Angus & Fife will keep bringing you back to this part of Scotland for years to come.

Scotland – Home of Fishing & Deer Stalking

We were frequently asked by golfers and non-golfers alike to include fishing and deer stalking within their bespoke vacation. In that regard, we have included a page here in our website to highlight the thrilling and remarkable activities on offer when you visit Scotland.

Angling is one of the most popular sports and pastimes in Scotland, which comes as no surprise when you see the quality and variety of its rivers and lochs. From the great expanse of the River Spey and the deep and magnificent Loch Ness to fast flowing mountain streams and secluded hilltop lochans. Scotland offers an infinite variety of fishing experiences for everyone that ventures to its shores. You are able to hire fishing tackle if your luggage is all taken up with your golfing equipment.

Deer stalking in the wilderness of the Scottish Highlands with an experienced stalker will allow you enjoy your day to the full. You will be in their safe hands as you walk through some of Scotland’s most beautiful scenery. Guns can be hired and licences arranged. Perhaps you prefer to let your camera do the shooting and deer stalkers will arrange that for you too.

When you visit Scotland, no day is long enough.

Visit the peaceful settings of the ruins of Melrose, Kelso, Dryburgh and Jedburgh Abbey’s. The Ayrshire coast for its sheltered beaches warmed by the Gulf Stream. This is trekking country at its best, gentle and rolling. Brodick Castle on the Isle of Arran, if you fancy a wee boat trip. Ayr Racecourse is Scotland’s premier course, and home to the Scottish Grand National.

Glasgow Golf Club  founded in 1787 is fortunate to have two top quality golf courses located 35 miles apart. A parkland course at Killermont which was designed by Old Tom Morris in 1903, and Glasgow Gailes a links course often chosen by the R&A as a qualifying course for the Open Championship. The links course enjoys heather lined fairways with some fine greens. A quote by the famous Scottish golfer Sandy Lyle, regarding Gailes was, ”it’s one of the worlds truely great tests of links golf”why not test your own skills here?

Machrie Bay Golf Course is a mere boat trip away on the Isle of Arran. It’s a flat course with stunning views and is suitable for golfers of all standards. The 1st tee is a bit tricky, with the road along one side and the shore on the other side, both out of bounds.

About 150 years ago the members belonging to Prestwick Golf Club decided to each give a donation of £25 towards payment for a red Moroccan belt which was then awarded as a trophy for their clubs newest championship. This tournament is still hotly contested and by a name you will be familiar with: The Open Championship. Sadly the links of Prestwick no longer host this magnificent event, although both Turnberry and Royal Troon just a wee bit further along the coast both hold this distinction.

It was at Turnberry in 2009 when we all held our breaths as Tom Watson almost made history there - no matter what flag you were flying that day the majority of the crowd both at the course or watching at home were rooting for him. What a fine Ambassador for golf Mr Watson is. Turnberry is the “baby” of the Open Championship venues, but just like all younger children, they are never overshadowed by their older siblings. Turnberry is no exception. During WW2 Turnberry was used as an airfield. If you find yourself hitting a duff shot, you might come across the old runway. Some dunes were levelled and the bunkers had to be filled in, but thanks to some pretty splendid restoration work in the 50′s it was back to business as usual. Even the “pitch and putt” by the hotel is a tough one!

The Roxburghe Golf Course is a parkland golf course set withing a 200 acre estate of woodland belonging to Roxburghe Hotel. A long championship course filled to the gunnels with bunkers and lakes. Colin Montgomerie recomends it as “perfect to play for professionals and amateurs”.

To the north with it’s tricky back nine lays Royal Troon, always a favourite with our American friends as the names on the trophy will testify to. Royal Troon has also been the host for the Senior Open when in 2006 we at Golf Link Scotland had the pleasure of helping to organise the trip for one of golf’s characters, Mr Fuzzy Zoeller. Fuzzy bought along his own fan base with him that year and as such he was always sure of a raucous send off at each tee.

There are many “little gems” to be found if you can tear yourself away from the more famous venues, You could take a trip across and see at near hand an island you’ll have seen many times when watching golf at Turnberry. The famous Ailsa Craig jutting out of the sea and made from granite, some of which is used as material for curling stones. It is now a sea bird colony and there are sailings from Girvan Harbour to take you out there, while you give your putting a rest for the day!

With many more links courses to be played and enjoyed before you turn to travel a few miles in-land. Don’t miss out on booking a tee time at Prestwick, especially if you are hoping to “bag” as many Open Championship courses as you can.

Turning inwards you will come across rolling hillsides to take your breath away. If you just can’t get away from the water then you could test yourself at Pines Golf Club in Dumfries and Galloway where they have no less than 7 of their 18 holes with watery features.

Southerness Golf course, as any golfing enthusiast will confirm, is well worth the modicome of effort involved in getting there. One of the relatively younger courses designed in 1947 by Mackenzie Ross and has some daunting greens. The 12th hole has many a bump to upset you, plus hitting into the prevailing south west wind when you know that any over hitting will find you on the shore.

Close by the Salway Firth Powfoot Golf Club will test your metal with it’s “bump and run” layout amidst picturesque landscape. If you enjoy a bit of history with your golf then cast a glance at Lochmaben Golf Course when you will sight some remains of the ancestral home of Robert the Bruce. King Robert in fact as far as history tells us was never on the battle field (or any other field) with William Wallace, in spite of what the movie told us! But it was a good yarn wasn’t it?

Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club is a fairly flat seaside Open Championship qualifier course. It has some small fast greens with great turf, it’s harder than it at first appears.

Western Gailes Golf Club is a Championship links with stunning views of the Firth of Clyde. It dates from 1897 and with three burns crossing the course, together with sand dunes and heather together with humps and hollows it should appeal to true connoisseurs of the game of golf we all love.

With more than one hundred golf courses situated withing the south west of Scotland, we hope we have whetted your appetite with just a few of them, no day is long enough.

Edinburgh & Lothians:

Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital boasts Edinburgh Castle the most famous in Scotland and is home to the Scottish crown jewels and The Stone of Destiny. The Palace of Holyroodhouse a former home of Mary Queen of Scots is also a place to see and Linlithgow Palace which was her birthplace is a short drive away. Step on board the Royal Yacht Britannia and see an insight into life with the Royals. The Forth Road Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in Britain at nearly 2km spanning the mighty River Forth.

Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society is the 4th oldest in the world and dates from 1761. With some spectacular views over the Firth of Forth, making concentrating on your swing challenging. Once you are here, you’ll find it hard to believe you are only 6 miles from the centre of Edinburgh. However, Bruntsfield has had plenty of time to grow the odd tree or two! With some well placed bunkers, manicured fairways plus the undulating greens here, all lulling you in to a false sense of security. At 6,407 yards the record in 2009 was set that year at 63.

Dunbar Golf Club was re-designed by Old Tom Morris in 1894 although it’s birth was in 1856. Being a links course, the sea breezes may come in to play changing your game by the minute. Following the line of the coast, and over looking the North Sea. Dunbar will demand accuracy at times but is sure to reward you with a golfing experience never forgotten.

Gullane Golf Club is where the courses have numbers rather than names, reflecting  their ages. Gullane has been used for pre-qualifying for The Open Championship as well as many other competitions. Golf was first enjoyed at Gullane in 1854 and boasts three superb links courses. There are plenty of bunkers and links grasses to contend with before you can treat yourself to a sit down in the delightful new visitors clubhouse.

Muirfield (The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers) has been the venue for many major championships both amateur and professional. A golf course designed as a challenging links for the world’s greatest golfers with many bunkers and long grasses in the rough.

Musselburgh Links The Old Course is said to be the oldest golf course in the world. Legend has it that Mary Queen of Scots once played here in 1567, and you can still hire some Hickory clubs if you want to have a real sense of how the golfers in yesteryear played the course. Sixty different clubs have used this famous 9 hole course at some time including The Honorable Company, Bruntsfield and Royal Burgess. The 4th hole called “Mrs Forman’s” after her hostelry situated beside the green, this proved to be a favourite watering hole as refreshments were handed out of the window and straight onto the green. An interesting piece of golf history concerning the early holes which run adjacent to the road. A duff shot would mean that the golfer had to play the ball from the road and so in 1886 a “brassie” a wood with a brass plate attached to the sole was born!

Musselburgh Golf Course was opened in 1938 in an effort to re-establish it’s link with the Open which had been played during the 1870′s and 80′s a number of times in Musselburgh. A suitable plot was not found untill the 1930′s and it was to the five times Open champion James Braid that the Councillors turned to design the layout of an 18 hole course, which is virtually unchanged to this day. It’s quite a testing parkland course for any golfer, with many a natural hazard to overcome.

North Berwick Golf Club dating back to 1832 with it’s situation alongside the Firth of Forth makes for a testing 18 rounds of golf. Like St Andrews, this golf course also starts and finishes at the clubhouse whilst enjoying some unrivaled views of the delightful white sandy beaches. The 15th hole will require some concentration as it’s played over a valley of hummocks with a veritable army of bunkers at the ready!

Royal Burgess Golfing Society is a mere 6 miles from Edinburgh, yet here lies a golfing haven set amidst a variety of mature trees. Dating from 1735 Royal Burgess is the oldest society for golf in the world and was laid out in 1895 with the help of Old Tom Morris, and later in 1945 by James Braid. Mr Braid incorporated some of his trademark bunkers just to help make the day a wee bit interesting!

Royal Musselburgh Golf Club is a delightful parkland course on the East Lothian coast, it boasts a 1774″ Old Club Cup” in it’s cabinet which is the oldest cup in the world still played for competitively. James Braid designed today’s course in 1926 and you can still enjoy the same terrific views across the Firth of Forth. The 14th needs a steady nerve to drive across a gulley to find a spot on a green surrounded by bunkers.

Edinburgh is renowned for all its festivals which are held at different times in the year. The Edinburgh Fringe and the Edinburgh Military Tattoo normally held in August are just two of the many “happenings” to be found in Scotland’s capital city.

No matter if it’s some serious retail therapy you desire or some top class dining you are looking for once the golf clubs are put away for the day, Edinburgh is a city of contrasts and has a wealth of history for you to discover and enjoy.

Glasgow & Clyde Valley:

Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city and a cultural hub, it’s a centre of cultural excellence with world famous art collections and museums. It was once the ‘second city of the Empire‘, and is now the second largest retail centre in the UK.  It is the home to Scottish Opera, Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Scottish Ballet, and as for the dining out…

Arbory Brae Golf Club is a step back in time where you can enjoy playing with hickory clubs and handmade “gutta” balls. See for yourself what hazards were like for the golfer of yesteryear. With natural ditches from start to finish and a question asked of you at the 8th hole of “do I go for it – or play it safe?” . Your patience and skill will be tested here like never before with this 1,858 yards of sheer magic.

Cawder Golf Course  just 15 minutes from Glasgow city centre where you might find yourself sharing the greens with buzzards and deer. Both courses here were designed by James Braid and it is interesting to note that part of the Antonine walls runs through the course. The Cawder course itself is a test incorporating woodland lush fairways and water features. Down hill towards the “A” listed Clubhouse to sit and enjoy the rest of your afternoon.

Crow Wood Golf Club is situated in Muirhead by Glasgow and is a very pleasant tree lined parkland 18 hole golf course. Designed by James Braid it enjoys views of the Campsie Fells and is a splendid course for golfers of all standards. The 10th hole may challenge you with trees on each side plus the hazard of the Garnkirk Burn lurking near by. Will you play safe, or go for it?

Glasgow Golf Club is lucky enough to have two courses and was founded in 1787 by serving army officers and wealthy merchants. The clubhouse was once a stately home built during the same era as Trafalgar, and in fact many of the early members went off to battle in the Napoleonic Wars. Glasgow Gailes is situated on the Ayreshire coast and is probably the better known of the two.

Hamilton Golf Club dates from 1892 although James Braid worked his bit of magic on it in 1927. Mr Braid certainly liked a bunker or two to feature in his designes, and Hamilton is no exception to his rule! A large number of trees have been added just to mix it up for you, which all helps to make this a very enjoyable day out.

Lanark Golf Club has an 18 and a 9 hole course and is situated in the Upper Clyde Valley. It enjoys smooth fast greens and tough moorland fairways. This is  a great course thanks to both Tom Morris (Snr) and James Braid who both had a hand in the design. Lanark has played host to the R & A on eleven occasions.

Lenzie Golf Course was founded in 1889 and has plenty on the fairways for you to look out for. Thorn hedges, old beech trees and shallow ditches together with some extensive fir and larch planting makes this a far more challenging course than the yardage may suggest.

Lochwinnoch Golf Club is situated amidst a peaceful setting on the edge of a conservation village and a bird sanctuary. Founded in 1897 it’s a hilly course enjoying some great views. Enjoy 18 holes of some testing golf on this parkland course.

Loch Lomond Gold Club is “the finest course in Europe” according to Sir Nick Faldo, and he knows a thing or two about golf courses. Only a member can invite you to play here, so the closest you may ever get is  by watching a tournament on your television. The course was designed by American golfer Tom Weiskopf and he certainly chose a beautiful spot for it. The 6th hole is 625 yards which may well be the longest hole in Scottish golf.

Renfrew Golf Club is a parkland 18 hold golf course with featured rivers and tree lined.  The R&A  held the Scottish Regional Qualifier for The Open, 2000-2004 at Renfrew. The 12th is short but tricky which has as well as a beautiful display of rhododendrons on show in the spring, also features a barrage balloon anchor from WWII just in the trees by the tee. Big hitters should avoid the pond!

If you have’nt done enough walking why not stroll around the beautiful Victorian grounds of the Kelvingrove Park? There is a Heritage Trail to follow with 35 interesting sites to look out for. There is also the Pollok Country Park with it’s extensive woodlands and a delightfully walled garden. You will find the Burrell Collection housed here too.

If you are looking for a trip with a difference, you can fly from the middle of Glasgow in a sea plane, landing on Loch Lomond.

Islands, Argyll & Stirling:

Rocky coastlines are home to a variety of wildlife second to none when you enter the magical world of Argyll and the Islands. Inland you’ll find Loch Lomond Scotland’s largest loch, and The Trossachs National Park set within the very heart of central Scotland. You can sail on the SS Sir Walter Scott to enjoy the splendours of Loch Katrine, or visit Stirling Castle the scene of some of Scotland’s most important historic battles. And all that is even before you un-pack your golf clubs.

Aberfoyle Golf Clubs is situated on the main road to Stirling. A hilly park-land course with 18 holes once again designed by James Braid. The 4th hole is tricky with a small green which is cut into the hillside. You’ll be in Rob Roy country, the most famous of the Scottish cattle reivers. Was he  an outlaw or a hero? All lost in folk-law now, but his grave is an interesting distraction from too much golf!

Alloa Golf Club lies amidst the panoramic view of the much loved Ochil Hills in the Forth Valley. Designed by Mr Braid in 1935 an 18 hole course with delightful tree lined fairways, but be on your guard from the 15th as you’ll need to concentrate and play some good golf.

Buchanan Golf Course in Drymen set amidst the castle grounds, a park-land course designed by Braid with many of his dogleg holes he loved so much. Some good views and easy walking, and enjoyable 18 holes of golf.

Callander Golf Club is a course with Old Tom’s signature on it and is set on a wooded parkland enjoying some spectacular views of Ben Ledi. The 15th hole awaits after you have navigated your way along a narrow avenue of trees, with many a bunker ready to catch you out.

Cardross Golf Club has hosted The Scottish Professional Championship is a testing 18 hole golf course with it’s undulating fairways and situated near to the beautiful Loch Lomond. There is a popular route to the east side of the loch where many “Monro baggers” begin their climb.

Cowal Golf Course a mile north of Dunoon is a heathland course overlooking the Firth of Clyde and Dunoon itself. Enjoy views of Ailsa Craig as you enjoy playing the James Braid 18 hole heathland course where you’ll find a few burns criss crossing your way just to keep it all interesting.

Falkirk Golf Club makes inviting golf amidst gorse and streams and is another of James Braid’s treasures. Although Falkirk was later shaped by the Scottish Industrial Revolution, the Romans were here first! In fact beneath the 7th green, the remains of a spearhead, part of a shield and a Centurion were found as recently as 1975 in a sandstone grave. However, it may be the 6th hole that comes back to haunt you.

Machrihanish Golf Club, believed to be the remotest Championship Links course in the British Isles. It’s architect Old Tom Morris is alleged to have pronounced “The Almighty had golf in his eye when he created this place” and he was’nt far wrong, Old Tom that is, not God! Paul McCartney certainly put this part of Scotland well and truly on the map when he wrote about “The Mull of Kintyle” but it has been evident for many years for those golfers willing to make the trip. In 1914 three time Open Champion J.H.Taylor came along and re-designed what is virtually the course as seen today. The first hole has been voted the finest in the world with the mighty Atlantic Ocean, figuratively speaking , snapping at your heels. You will need to pick your irons with care if you have any hope of reaching the excellently maintained greens.

Rothesay Golf Course sits at the heart of the Firth of Clyde upon the Isle of Bute. This is another Braid course designed with the help of Ben Sayers, it’s a moorland 18 hole course made all the more challenging by the scenery and it’s windy situation. Bute has many sandy bays and sheltered coves and you can enjoy discovering charming hamlets and villages here  while you combine your golf with some site seeing.

Stirling itself deserves a mention here to say that in 1505 King James IV ordered 12 golf balls to be used at a forthcoming Royal games from Stirling. Stirling Golf Course was founded in 1869, so a bit after his time then. It is an 18 hole course with some testing rolling parkland to compete with the views of Stirling Castle, which may also put you off your game. There’s no shortage of things to do here after you leave the golf clubs back at the hotel. Stirling Castle is a must, even if you’re not sure who Robert the Bruce was. Visit the Bannockburn Centre just a few miles outside Stirling to complete your history lesson.

Dundee, Perthshire, Angus and Fife:

Lochs, mountains and glens can all be found  in beautiful Perthshire. Then right next door is the home of golf itself  at St Andrews. Glamis Castle, the childhood home of  Her Majesty the Queen Mother well worth a visit, not surprisingly they even have their own ghost. A trip across to Discovery Point visitor centre and see Captain Scott’s ship the RSS Discovery, where you can climb on board and see what it was like in those days. Arbroath Abbey, and Scone Palace together with Faulkland Palace offers you history in abundance. Tranquil coastal villages to relax in with a pub lunch. With so much to offer, you’ll hardly notice that you have’nt picked up your clubs in days!

Blairgowrie Rosemount founded in 1889 and it was here that in 1977 Greg Norman won his first ever tournement on the European tour. There are two wooded heathland 18 hole courses here in Blaigowrie, plus a 9 hole if 36 holes are not enough for you! If you pop just down the road to Alyth a delightful 9 hole course which James Briad worked his magic on in 1894,  a man who must have never gone home, because his stamp is all across the country! Some precision golfing required here.

The killer links of the splendid Carnoustie was founded in 1842 when just 10 holes were designed by Allan Robertson. Although records show that as long ago as the 16th century, golf was being enjoyed near by at the Barry links. The Championship Course here at Carnoustie  was extended to 18 by Old Tom Morris is 1867 then Willie Park Junior also helped to improve it. However, for today’s golf it’s hat’s off once again to James Braid who in 1926 re-modelled the course to much as we see it today. With so much already written about “the toughest links in the world” it’s difficult to come up with any new descriptive for this many times hosted Open Championship Course. Suffice to say if you don’t play accurately then the price to pay is heavy, but don’y let that stop you! The Budden and The Burnside can also be found on Links Parade in Carnoustie, also 18 hole courses.

Crail Golfing Society was founded in 1786 while the Balcomie Links was designed in 1895 by the legendary Old Tom Morris.  The Balcomie twists and turns with some rocky paths and sandy coves. It features a 5th hole aptly named “Hell’s Hole”. A  fabulous new course was added called the Craighead Links designed by an American Gil Hanse, which is quickly becoming a new classic. With lots of naughty bunkers and some sweeping fairways help to entice and trick you.

Gleneagles is the venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup where it will be fought over upon the fabulous PGA Centenary course designed by a new master, Jack Nicklaus. Gleneagles is set amidst the beautiful Perthshire hills and showcases the famous King’s Course  another 18 holes designed by the legendary James Braid. It is more than forty years since Scotland had the pleasure of hosting The Ryder Cup and our mouths are watering at the prospect of watching it unfolding here at Gleneagles. The PGA Centenary Course at 7,088 yards measured from the Championship tee is believed to be the longest inland golf course in Scotland. Opened in 1919, the King’s Course with typical springy turf combined with testing holes causes a host of problems for even the golfer on top of their form. While the Queen’s enjoys ditches as water hazards for greater challenges for you to “enjoy”. An interesting footnote for the Queen’s Course is that (to date) the only man to have ever hit a golf ball while on the moon has also played here, that’s Alan Shepard by the way!

Kingsbarns Golf Links lies within 115 miles of coastal paths that twist,  turn and never fail to impressive you as you enjoy the delights that are the Kingdom of Fife. Kingsbarns Links with it’s sea views from every hole is a challenging opponent for you to face, even when the wind is not blowing. From it’s dune ridges to the many a tangles of Scottish heather just waiting to hide your ball if you’re not right on top of your game. You’ll breath a sigh of relief when you finally retrieve your ball from the 18th!

Ladybank Golf Club established in 1879 as a six hole course and designed by the legendary Old Tom Morris. This is a testing 18 hole golf course which is a qualifying course for The Open and is a true test for the brave, with some precise shots required or you will find yourself amongst the heather. The great Seve Ballesteros was counted amongst it’s honorary members.

St Andrews Old Course – what can be written about this famous links course that has not already been written and far more eloquently? I can tell you that although my husband “bogeyed” every hole but one,  when he reached the 18th  he got a “birdie”and in true golfers form, it’s the only hole he remembers! The sense of history when you play here, together with it’s challenging and unique situation makes it a true golfing experience. The golf writer Michael McDonnell has this to say “One of the recurring charms of golf is that even the humble duffer can stand on the same hallowed ground where great deeds have been performed by past heroes and savour the challenge they experienced. It is a bond between champion and devotees few other sports can offer”. In 1764 the players here at St Andrews declared that 18 holes would be the perfect amount for a game of golf, I guess we can’t argue with that!

St Andrews New Course must be worth a mention as it was laid out by Old Tom Morris and open in 1895. Naturally it includes many of the same styles of hazard as it’s big brother does and is a tough test for anyone who does not show it the utmost respect.

If you want to enjoy a sense of the past, why not head towards Cupar and play with some 100 year old wooden shaft golf clubs? Kingarrock Hickory Club, where modern clubs are banned, is a nine hole course and is open to all the family.

Aberdeen & North East:

Long sunny days, low rainfall and pure water make this Scotland’s whisky country. Founded in 1797  Glen Garioch remains one of the oldest of the working distilleries in operation in Scotland. With castles galore on the unique Castle Trail, Aberdeen makes a great place to stay while you drink in your fill of some of the finest castles while you gain a great sense of this area’s truly remarkable and ever changing past.

Don’t be fooled when the view from the clubhouse at Ballater tricks you in to suggesting that the course is a flat one. Situated in Upper Deeside and established as a nine hole course in 1892 and later as an 18 hole course once again in Scotland you have to keep your attention on the ball, and not the scenery. Several of the holes lie temptingly near to the River Dee and the 5th demands an exact tee shot to avoid finding yourself in a spot of bother!

Cruden Bay Golf Course does not have excellent practice facilities for nothing – you will need them when you play on this golfing master-piece. You will encounter every golf shot possible, so will require all your ammunition when you take on this splendid example of a Scottish links course. Pitting your wits against knee high rough and some tower-like dunes not forgetting the odd burn just when you thought you’d seen it all. Try not to still be playing near to dusk as the ruins of Slains Castle believed to have inspired Bram Stoker as he wrote the “Dracula” novel, are also lurking in the background.

Duff House Royal Golf Club sits on the Moray Firth coast between Inverness and Aberdeen. It’s a flat park-land 18 hole golf course established in 1909 with a very tricky ninth hole. Hitting it too long and pulled will find you in the river, while there is a tempting bunker just waiting for you if you’re not careful.

Fraserburgh Golf Club is the seventh oldest golf club in the world, dating back to 1780. In fact in 1613 the parish records state that a young man named John Burnett received punishment for being caught playing golf on a Sunday. Fraserburgh is a testing seaside links on the north eastern tip with a tricky seventh hole which slopes from back to front.

Newmachar has two courses - Hawkshill is heathland and of championship standard with some testing water hazards, and Swailend a few years newer, and with less water and trees as Hawkshill, but as such is open to the elements. Both courses are 18 holes and promise to give the golfer a very pleasurable round.

Peterhead Golf Course is one of those hidden gems we like to brag about. A natural links course well worth the journey up here. With the River Ugie some grassy dunes and the sea to contend with, it’s a challenging test  of your golf.

The Royal Aberdeen Golf Club hosted the Walker Cup in 2011 featuring the Balgownie links set amid the sand, sea and hills and featuring an outward nine holes  reckoned to be the finest stretches of links on the planet. The 18th is surely one of the best finishing holes in Scotland. Make sure you bring a full bag of balls with you.

East of McDuff you will find the park-land cliff topped Royal Tarlair Golf Club who can boast of a 13th hole some rival the 7th at Pebble Beach with. Hold your breath as you take a shot amid the cliff side setting and watch it fly across  the gully, (or not) dramatic stuff. If you are not  a serious golfer, just enjoy the spectacular coastline as you walk around.

The British Royal Family have enjoyed their holidays in Royal Deeside ever since their ancestor Queen Victoria first fell in love with the splendour of the area and purchased Balmoral Castle. You can visit the castle during the summer         and follow the Victoria Heritage Trail and enjoy seeing for yourselves the many spots Victoria and Albert came to know and love.

There are actually more castles per acre in this area than any place else in the United Kingdom, and you can follow a Castle Trail which includes 13 splendid castles and historic homes. Everyone has it’s own tale to tell with some drama guaranteed. Keep an open mind about the ghosts!

Aberdeen and the North East of Scotland will delight  you with it’s beautiful beaches and the incredible Cairngorms National Park. Put the golf clubs down for a day or two and see what splendour awaits you.
