Highlands and Isle of Skye:

Spectacular scenery and majestic mountains await you as you travel  further north. Inverness is the the Highland’s capital and there’s plenty to see and do here, with or without your clubs. As you are in this part of the country, it would be a pity to miss out on a bit of Nessie spotting, and Loch Ness is a monster of a loch itself.

History awaits you at Culloden, the site of the last battle on British soil when many brave supporters of Bonnie Prince Charlie fell. Just a few miles away lies Fort George built in the 18th century taking around 20 years to be completed and one of Europe’s outstanding military fortifications.

UllapoolBoat of Garten Golf Course was another of James Braid’s designs when an avenue of silver birch trees make a natural hazard along the fairway. As it the spectacular views along the River Spey and the snow capped peaks of the Cairngorm mountains arn’t enough to put you off your shot!

Golf at Brora Golf Club dates from 1891 and in 1923 James Braid had a hand in creating what Austrailia’s Peter Thomson describes as “the most natural links anywhere in the world” and he should know being five times Open Champion. It boasts interesting and testing holes, with a tricky drive o the 12th.

Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Club enjoys it’s situation on the Chanonry Point Peninsula and has such has the sea on three sides of the course. Depending on the strength of the wind, you will need to judge on the 5th whether to select a wedge or a 3 iron. Don’t let the near by dolphin colony distract you too much.

Inverness sits majestically at the top of the great glen and has many attractions to offer the visitor. Inverness Championship Golf Course is fairly flat which is a bonus if you happen to be playing against the prevailing winds, with the Mill Burn meandering across some of the course, just to make things interesting.

Isle of SkyeAlmost half an hour from Inverness finds a delightful coastal town called Nairn. Nairn has two Championship courses to shout about a gorgeous beach and is well known for a sunny climate. Nairn Dunbar has a signature 7th hole which is flanked by gorse bushes and trees with a Minister’s Loch a hazard from the tee. It also has a tempting loch ready to welcome your tee shot.

The Nairn Golf Club hosted The Walker Cup in 1999 after which the U.S. Captain Danny Yates said that “the golf course was spectacular , The conditioning, the set up could’nt have been better. This has been a special place, and the people have been so wonderful”. This is a course that Old Tom Morris also had a hand in designing.

Here’s and interesting fact: Charlie Chaplin often took his holidays in Nairn.

Newtonmore  also has a Riding Centre as well as a golf course beside the fast running River Spey. Eighteen holes of flat parkland for some pretty easy walking .

For a Championship golf course of the highest order, look no further than The Royal Dornoch, a must on every golfers list of top ten courses. It has tricky greens set amid spectacular scenery and depending on the weather, plays differently every time you’ll have the pleasure of testing your skills against it. Prepare to be punished as you make your way across bunkers and knolls, hummocks, swales and sand-hills. Tom Watson once declared that he’s had the “most fun I’ve had playing golf in my whole life”.

GlencoeGreg Norman is a great fan of Carnegie Golf Course on the 7,500 acres estate of Skibo Castle. The surrounding scenery is magnificent and has been voted number 1 new golf course by the Golf World magazine. Peter de Savary spent in excess of £10 million after he bought the castle which had unfortunately fallen into somewhat disrepair. With a superb range of tees designed with all standards catered for, if you have the opportunity to play these rolling fairways, do take it.

Designed by Old Tom Morris in 1890, Tain Golf Course has 18 holes, 3 of which have the River Tain winding it’s way amid them. Fast greens on sometimes inland and sometimes links, the 11th hole is testing, unless you can see around the corner of the sand-hills, that should test you!

Aside from the golf, The Highlands has an amazing aray of different wildlife, do take the time away from the splendid golf courses to enjoy all there is on offer here.

The is a pleasant 9 hole golf course on the Isle of Skye with naturally as you would expect, some super views of the rolling Cullin hills. If climbing  Munro is more to your taste the most difficult is on Skye. not for the faint hearted and you may well be advised to take someone with you who is familiar with it. The Isle of Skye has it’s very own Highland Games in August with a piping competition.

Western Isles, Orkney & Shetland:

A paradise for wildlife. Beautiful white sands on the Western Isles help to make this special place a golfing heaven. Visit Skara Brae on Orkney to see Stone Age settlements. These islands have strong Nordic influences, which can be found in their place names and culture. It is believed that 100 Iron-Age settlements stood on the Shetland Island, and many impressive artefacts have been discovered.

If you are up to some island hopping  then trying out some of Orkney’s magic might be just the thing you’re after. With six golf courses to tempt you across to this cluster of islands why not try out a couple for yourself? The courses in Orkney are a real “stomach” as the locals might call it, a right mix of parkland, links and even the odd bunker left over from the war to contend with.

Stromness Golf Club with magnificent views over the Hoy Sounds boasting what must surely be one of the only golf courses to promote midnight golf on a mid summers day, could be the most interesting round you’ll ever play! Stromness translates from “headland in the stream” and there is plenty to interest the visitor with it’s small lanes twisting and turning along the shore. Stromness Golf Club have their own Open Championship each year with players taking part from home and abroad.

Perhaps you’d like to be able to say you’ve played golf on the most northerly course in the UK? Then Whalsay on the Shetlands will fit the bill with it’s amazing setting upon the cliffs. Once it was a proud fishing port, and locally known as the “bonny island”.

“Old Tom Morris” weaved some of his magic away in South Uist at Askernish, now restored to Open Championship standard and already welcoming new visitors to the idea of island golf.

With a back drop of stunning white beaches and a view across to the famous island of Taransay, Harris Golf Club is designed for you to enjoy the experience of playing amidst the brimming character of machair dunes. Harris and Lewis are in fact only one landmass although very different in landscape they are divided by hills and sea lochs.

Take a hop across from Papa Westray to Westray a flight taking a mere three minutes, it’s believed to be the shortest scheduled plane trip in the world, and enjoy playing a nine hole links course there, but keep an eye out for the rabbit holes. The oldest standing house in Europe is found in Papa Westray and is known as The Knap of Howar.

The Uists showcase beauty and a rich history if you are prepared to venture further afield. Barra Golf club enjoys views over the Atlantic as the UK’s most westerly golf course.  It’s at Barra that you might just find yourself facing the challenge of sharing the greens with some wandering livestock!

Highland CattleAn interesting footnote from the Isle of Harris Golf Club is a five pound note signed by Sir Nick Faldo which they have framed and is played for every year, it’s known as The Faldo Fiver!  He dropped it into their “honesty box” after enjoying a round on what he claimed was “one of the most beautiful spots for golf”. The degree of difficulty will sometimes tax you depending on the extent of any gale force winds gushing in across the Atlantic at the time!

Benbecula Golf Course is pretty flat, with a few tricky holes not made any easier to navigate due to the rabbit population, although it’s normally kept in good condition.

Founded in 1889 Orkney Golf Club is an 18 hole parkland course is just a short crossing or flight from the mainland which sets you upon a voyage of discovery. Situated in the Island’s capital of Kirkwall which comes from the Norse meaning Church Bay, Orkney is steeped in history and Kirkwall is a fairly bustling wee town.

Take the time to lift your head as you stand ready to tee off amid some of the most beautiful scenery, and drink in the beauty of the place. There are whales, otters and seals to be seen if you care to seek them out. Orkney is home to around 60,000 puffins most of them across on Sule Skerry which is an in-accessible island about fifty miles off the coast.

Island folk don’t need much encouragement to celebrate a festival or event of some kind or another. From Jazz to fiddle playing and all types of music in between. The year kicks off on Shetland in January with the Scalloway Fire Festival  consisting of a torch lit procession and galley burning, just to set you up for the year!

So why not put your golf clubs down for a few days and enjoy the inspirational scenery and diverse culture that this part of Scotland has to offer you.

The Ryder Cup

Visitors Guide to Golf Courses in Scotland

By clicking on any of the golf courses in Scotland listed  below you will be directed to one of our Regional pages where you will find details of the course you are interested in, including contact details and website addresses where available.

St Andrews Fife is the most famous golf destination in the world but why not try somewhere new? Gleneagles is hosting The Ryder Cup in 2014 which may tempt you to visit, they have three fantastic championship parkland courses, King’s, Queen’s and the PGA (ryder Cup venue).  My personal favourite is the King’s course. The Highlands have some fantastic courses as well including the famous Royal Dornoch and Nairn. Spend some time looking around several courses as there many hidden gems to test your game and they might be a lot easier to get on and a lot less painful on the wallet.

Is is always nice to pick up a souvenir at the major golfing venues if it is only a few golf tees or half a dozen golf balls. But there are no shortage of branded golf clothes to be found with logo’s of the famous clubs embroidered on them. You could always indulge yourself with a new bag as long as it will fit in your car or on the plane when you return home.

If you fancy sampling a bit of Scottish golf history then how about Mussleburgh – Old Links where you can hire Hickory shafted clubs. The choice is almost endless.

Using this information in association with our Regional accommodation guides we hope you will be better placed to arrange your golf break to Scotland.

History of Golf in ScotlandHistory of Golf

History of Golf in Scotland is quite simple in so far that Scotland is the ancient home of Golf. First mentioned in 1457 when playing golf was banned by James II because too many Scots preferred to play golf rather than practice archery!

The ban was lifted in 1502 and since then Scots have been free to indulge in their national pastime. The Stewart monarchs were themselves keen golfers and when James VI inherited the English throne in 1603, he introduced the game to England when he moved his court to London where any number of his retinue took their clubs along to Blackheath Common. Archery plays another part in the history of golf – the skills of the bow makers were utilised in the making of early club shafts! The King got his from a Perth bow maker.

It is difficult to imagine how the gentlemen in our photograph would have felt wearing his very fine golf outfit on the links but perhaps his shiny buttons doubled up as ball markers. Thankfully we now only have to wear comfortable knitwear and a pair of golfing trousers, unless of course it is raining.

Traditionally golf in Scotland was played on ‘links’ – the common land by the seaside where the turf was considered ideal. Of course today’s golf courses in Scotland can lie in pasture, parkland, heathland or moorland, but the sand filled bunkers found in all courses worldwide owe their origins to the natural sand pits of Scottish ‘links’. We have some of the best golf courses in the world.

Links Golf

The oldest golf club is the Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers dating back to 1744, and The Royal and Ancient Golf Club was formed in 1754. However, as long ago as 1672 golf was played on the Old Course Links in Musselburgh, with popular rumour indicating that Mary Queen of Scots (should that read “shots”?) enjoyed the odd round or two of golf there in 1567. Golf has been played at the St Andrews Links since the 1400′s.

Archbishop John Hamilton issued a charter in 1552 where he approved the rights to the towns people of St Andrews for “the playing of golff futball, schuteing at all gamis with all uther manner of pastyme as ever thai pleis” so long as he established his rights to all the rabbits from the links!

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews enjoys a history far more comprehensive in it’s origins than the few lines here, but this will give you an insight into their beginnings. The Society of St Andrews Golfers were founded on May 14th 1754 by the local dignitaries, peers, landowners and university professors when they formed themselves into a society. They followed the lead of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers and The Royal Burgess Society of Edinburgh. They numbed 22 and celebrated their foundation with a game consisting of 22 holes, 11 out and 11 back. For the occasion they used the 13 rules (with one exception) from The Honourable Company, not yet having their own. In 2004 the R & A took over as golf’s governing body

Just along the coast lies Musselburgh Old Course, who can lay claim to being the oldest golf course in the world as per the book of Guinness World Records. They do say that Mary Queen of Scots enjoyed a game here in 1567. A gentleman by the name of  Sir John Foulis of Ravelston has an entry in his book of accounts relating to “3 golfe balls ” which he “lost at golfe in Musselburgh”. The entry was dated March 2nd 1672!

Old Tom Morris

The ghost of Old Tom Morris must surely still be hovering about on the many greens and fairways he helped to create during his 38 years as green-keeper for the R&A. Tom was born in St Andrews (1821 - 1908)  and developed his green-keeping skills at Prestwick. His remuneration was believed to be for £50 a year, which was a lot of money for the son of a weaver. When you read who designed many of the golf courses around this part of Scotland, the name of Old Tom Morris frequently appears. If you are looking to play some golf in the Kingdom, take your vacation in Fife, and play were your heroes have , some may have even designed it!

James Braid

One of the most talented course designers of all time, James Braid (1870-1950) was born in Fife in Earlsferry, he became a professional in 1896. In his early career he encountered lots of problems with his putting (he’s not alone there!) but found he improved once he changed to using an aluminum putter.  He won The Open Championship in 1901, 1905, 1906, 1908 and 1910. However, he is most probably best remembered for the course design at Gleneagles which surely must be his lasting  masterpiece.  Although not the inventor of it, his signature was very much the dog-leg. Thanks for that Mr Braid.

The Open Championship

The Open is the oldest championship played in professional golf and is administered by The Royal and Ancient. This event was first played in 1860 at the Ayreshire golf club in Prestwick . The match played over 36 holes attracted 8 Scottish professionals to the field. The favourite was Old Tom Morris, but he lost by two strokes to Willie Park Senior. Willie was awarded a Moroccan red leather belt – no cash prize awarded during the first three Open Championship’s then in 1863 when the “pot” was £10.

In 1870 Young Tom Morris was awarded the belt after he won on three successive occasions, it was at this time that the now famous Claret Jug was created to be awarded to the winner. And by 1892 the “pot” was a staggering £100 – that’s inflation for you! Many of the early contenders for the competition were using the prize money to supplement their meager wages, most were caddies, green-keepers and other lowly paid workers within the golfing industry.

In the modern era – post 1950 the golfer with the most Open Championship wins is the likeable American golfer Tom Watson. Tom has had his name etched on the Claret Jug five times.

The Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup Contest is contested every other year, and is played with two teams The United States of America versus Europe, the administration is shared between the PGA for the two contenders. The teams who are fiercely competitive do not play for a purse or a pot, but for the sheer pleasure of beating their opponents.

In the beginning, it was Great Britain & Ireland who played against The United States of America, but although the early matches were fairly even, by the fifties it was a pretty one sided affair with the USA dominating. The European’s were included in the mix by the end of 70′s which very nicely tied in with the coming-of-age of a certain Mr Seve Ballesteros. After then, the competition was so much more competitive and enjoyable.
